Ten seizure-free years and counting…

This might not be the actual date, but it’s the one I’ve chosen to celebrate the 10th anniversary of my last “involuntary loss of consciousness.” I haven’t had a blackout in a decade. My anti-seizure meds seem to be working…

It’s strange that I can remember the exact dates of my two generalized tonic-clonic (grand mal) seizures: 9/30/91 and 1/2/02. Beyond those, I’m lucky if I can pin them down to a specific month. Except for this one, of course. April 16th was a special date, primarily because Minnesota suspends your driver’s license for six months after an involuntary loss of consciousness. If my last seizure had happened after April 19th, that six months could have carried over past my 26th birthday and I would have had to retake my driver’s test. At age 26.

So when the necessary time had passed and it was a few days before my birthday, we were scurrying around to fill out paperwork so I could get my license back without sitting in a room full of teenagers for an entire day, facing a constant battle of wanting to bash my head against a table, hopefully leading to a voluntary loss of consciousness.

I don’t think I’ve written about my seizure in ’02 before, so I’ll try to give you all an abridged version of the story. Keep in mind that some of this is a little fuzzy, especially the order in which stuff happened, but 1 1/2 weeks in the hospital tends to blend things together a bit. I only care about certain weddings

The Royal Wedding of Prince William and Commoner Kate is not one of them.

Conversely, my little brother Justin married Molly Moilanen on this date three years ago. I talked to him on the phone earlier tonight and he was happy to report, “We made it over the two-year hump, so we should be good for another forty, fifty years.” I hope so for their sakes. Happy anniversary, guys.

It’s only the first day?!

How I celebrated the Winter Solstice of 2010:

1) Silently wished my older brother and his wife, Brent and Gail, a happy 7th anniversary.

2) Shoveled another 5″ of snow off the front steps and driveway that came down yesterday.

2a) Got hot and sweaty doing it due to temperatures in the 20s.

2b) Became sad when realizing that “in the 20s” is a warm first day of winter here in MN.

3) Took a looooooong, hot shower to help melt away the aches and pains of shoveling… and rinse away the sweat, too.

4) Napped off and on for several hours due to exertion and lack of sleep last night.

5) Learned that this is the 2nd snowiest December on record.

5a) Did not curse upon learning this fact.

6) Received a copy of EA Sports Active 2 for the Wii that I ordered from Amazon.com to help combat some of the lingering after-effects of my trip to Norway: “Have seconds!” “Go back for another serving!” “Time for delectable desserts!” “I TOLD YOU TO EAT MORE, DAMMIT!

7) Wrote this blog entry of the day and felt a great deal of self-satisfaction having done so. Yay me.

So that’s a summary of today’s events. Given how crazy things got, I can only imagine what the second day of winter will bring.

Happy 40th Anniversary

Today commemorates the 40th anniversary of my parents’ marriage and it was perilously close to being a non-event: if it weren’t for a little added pressure earlier this evening, the day’s only significance would have been their visiting the Rainbow Foods in Lakeville that opened today and eating samples of a wide variety of exotic foods that no one would ever buy unless they won the lottery. Or unless the grocers laced the mini-sausages with a little something special for their new customers… Continue reading “Happy 40th Anniversary”
