Gratitudes 2018, Day 31

The Great Minnesota Get-Together! Full of fun, festivities and fatty foods! On a stick! (Oddly enough, we had plenty of things to eat today, but all of it was distinctly lacking in the stick department. Fatty, on the other hand…)

  1. The Minnesota State Fair. Because of all the things mentioned above. Plus cheese curds. Definitely cheese curds.

  2. Cheese curds. My trip to the Fair isn’t complete until I’ve had some. NOM NOM NOM…

  3. Free State Fair tickets. “If I work a four-hour shift at the Epilepsy Foundation of Minnesota’s State Fair booth, they’ll give me free tickets? Sure!”

  4. Free t-shirts. “If I work a four-hour shift at the Epilepsy Foundation of Minnesota’s State Fair booth, they’ll give me a free t-shirt? Sure!”

  5. Free… pencils? I guess it was nice to give EFMN pencils to people who visited our booth, so sure, I’m grateful for those, too. Pencils aren’t as much fun as toothpick puzzles at the Mensa booth, but we had something they didn’t have…

  6. Plinko. Hand the kids a plastic chip, have them drop it into one of several different slots, watch it bounce off little posts as it makes its way to the bottom of the Plinko board, then the spot where it finally lands indicates which trivia question about epilepsy we ask them (two were multiple choice, two were true/false, so at worst, your odds of guessing correctly were 33%). That’s right, we made them work for their free stuff! Hey, wait a second…

Gratitudes 2018, Day 30

This is completely unrelated to today’s set of gratitudes, but the number 30 holds a special place in my heart because of a class in college about The Divine Comedy (see: Dante’s Inferno plus two more books that almost no one’s heard of before). I would occasionally jot down funny things Professor Shutt said in the margins of my notebook and I’m not sure which book this was in reference to, but…

“It happens in Canto 30. I know, you would think it would be Canto 27, but this is three times three times three plus three. Whoa, too intense!”

And so to celebrate Day 3x3x3+3, we’re starting with…

  1. Pads of paper. They work well with pens, but they don’t look very good sticking out of Baby Groot’s head. (They’re also handy for writing down quotes from your teachers and professors during class.) In today’s case, though, I was grateful to have something for writing gratitudes because I didn’t have my cell phone at work.
  2. Leaving my cell phone at home. It wasn’t intentional, but in a way, I didn’t mind forgetting to put it back in my pocket after sending someone a text message this morning. It meant there were no distractions: no email, Facebook, YouTube, Instagram, Twitter, games on my phone, etc. That was like a weight off my shoulders that lasted for a large part of the day. However…
  3. Work email. I couldn’t reply to text messages that people sent me, so being able to send emails was a way to let them know I was still alive. (The more I thought about it, the more it occurred to me that without my cell phone, that email account is my only connection to anyone or anything outside the building. Unless I finally snap and run out the front door screaming like my hair was on fire. And if I do actually snap, odds are pretty good that something will be on fire.)
  4. Clocks. There’s one up on the wall in the break room and I’m really grateful it was there today so that I knew when my break was over. I couldn’t check the clock on my cell phone, soooo… yeah.
  5. My brain. I was debating what to label this gratitude: my inner monologue, imagination, thoughts… I decided to settle with the overarching “My brain.” The issue was that I didn’t feel a strong urge to take a break today because I didn’t have a cell phone to give me something to do, keep me distracted for 15 minutes or so before going back to work. However, it occurred to me that I could grab a pad of paper, bring it to the break room so I could watch the clock, then start thinking about what my gratitudes should be today. Given how smoothly this went because I could refer to my notes, I think it turned out pretty well.

Gratitudes 2018, Day 29

It’s late and I’m running low on energy, so I’m lacking the gumption to come up with a theme for today’s gratitudes. Not that I don’t have anything to be grateful for, just that there probably won’t be anything to tie everything together. Unless I’m just that good and don’t even know it.

  1. Cloudy days. I know, it seems a bit counter-intuitive… “What’s so great about cloudy days? They’re… full of clouds!” But that can be good sometimes. I like to sit outside during my work breaks if the weather is nice, but when it’s sunny and warm, I might get a little sweaty and my phone’s screen will get really dark in response to so much light. When it’s cloudy outside? The temp is usually nicer and I don’t need to try to cover the phone with my shadow.
  2. Pens. Aside from using them to write stuff, they look really good sticking out of Baby Groot’s head.
  3. Bedside lamps. Teresa already went to sleep. I don’t want to turn the ceiling light on, so being able to see around the room with a smaller light source can come in really handy at times likes this.
  4. Electrics fans. Gray noise helps me fall asleep and stay asleep, so turning it to low and pointing it at the wall works really well in the bedroom. (Oh yeah, and it helps muffle the noise outside so the dogs stay a little calmer, too.)
  5. Adobe Acrobat Reader. Aside from seeing around the room, I also needed to copy some editing notes tonight. Previously, I had to pass a hard copy back and forth with the person helping me (Thanks, Mom!), but now I can use Acrobat Reader to make notes on a PDF, then email it as soon as it’s done. Waaaaaay faster, especially since I live 15 minutes away. Not a long drive, but it’s half an hour on the road that I can use to write gratitudes instead.

Gratitudes 2018, Day 28

  1. Anniversaries. More specifically, my parents’ anniversaries. Which keep happening on this date over and over. I’m starting to think it’s more than just a coincidence… So to my mom and dad, happy 53rd anniversary!

  2. Photo albums. We’ve kept them since before I was born, which is good for refreshing happy memories, remembering the odd places I fell asleep around the house and double-checking how old I was when I broke one of my arms. (It took a while to find the album that had some pictures—for the record, it was my left arm when I was 2.)

  3. Old furniture. One of the items I use as a bookshelf back at my parents’ house is Dad’s old school desk. He used it as a kid, so that thing is way older than me. I treat my elders with respect: I use it for books that I read for English classes back in college. “Take care of my Shakespeare anthology, desk, he’s your elder, too!”

  4. Family vacations. Some of those albums came from trips we’ve taken across the country, into Canada, up to Alaska, overseas… happy memories for all of us.

  5. Being able to wish my parents a happy anniversary. I may not live in their basement anymore, but I can still let them know (via text message this year) how grateful I am for everything they’ve done for me over the last 40+ years. Love you guys!

Gratitudes 2018, Day 27

  1. Baby Groot. Why? “I am Groot. I am Groot? I! AM! GROOT!!!” (Roughly translated: I can hold Shawn’s pens like a boss.)

  2. My Deadpool piggy bank. Mask, swords, utility belt… the works. Plus a big slot across his shoulder blades big enough for coins. Both 1 and 2 were gifts from Teresa and I’m very grateful for both of them. Plus I like using Deadpool for my spare change instead of a can originally made for Pepperidge Farms Entertaining Cookies. (Quite frankly, I didn’t find those cookies entertaining at all. They couldn’t sing, they couldn’t dance, they couldn’t juggle, they couldn’t guess my card… I gave up and ate them all out of spite.)

  3. Deadpool (the movie). I loved it when I saw it in the theater, so I bought the DVD. Shortly after we started dating, I watched it with Teresa. As pretext, she’s a fan of G-rated swear words (“Oh, shhhhugar!”) But she loved it, too. That was a pretty good sign for things to come.

  4. Ryan Reynolds. He’s absolutely dreamy… except when he’s playing a never-quite-terminal cancer victim. Then he’s hilarious.

  5. Comic books. I’ve got a couple thousand bagged and boxed under my parents’ staircase. One of my favorites? New Mutants #98, Deadpool’s comic book debut. (I have other favorites, but that one gets honorary mention today.)

Gratitudes 2018, Day 26

Since I mentioned The Beatles yesterday, I decided to cruise through the Interwebs and find some of their songs that I’m glad I’ve heard in the past.

Mind you, I don’t own any Beatles albums. I’m going waaaaay back to riding in my dad’s truck as a kid listening to the oldies station. (Yes, I’m aware that they play 70s and 80s music now, but back then, it was 40s and 50s. Now get off my lawn!) So here are some that I’m grateful for in no particular order:

  1. Hey Jude. I lied, this one is first for a reason. It’s a good song, of course, but it’s also apparently got a great melody for chanting at Norwegian soccer matches. I have no idea what they were chanting, but I know it wasn’t the original lyrics.

  2. All You Need Is Love. Because that’s what inspired today’s list of gratitudes.

  3. Twist and Shout. Because who doesn’t like twisting and shouting? Unless ankle injuries are involved. Then it’s bad.

  4. Yesterday. If you want to feel wistful and sad, this song will definitely help.

  5. Here Comes the Sun. If you want to stop feeling wistful and sad, “It’s all right, do-do-do-do, do-do-do, do-do-do, do-do-do-do-do…”
