Okay, so I’m a little behind with my Beauty and the Geek reviews. I managed to watch the first two-hour premiere today, but I didn’t have time to get anything written down (Lord knows I’ll have to do some research to figure out all their names… talking about how half of them have had boob jobs—geeks included—can only fill up so many paragraphs, ya know…). But I had to take off after watching the show to visit someone in the hospital.
He’s gonna be there for just a few days and I spent a couple hours in his room yesterday, but I had a light case of the sniffles and didn’t want to get too close. He’s in the hospital, he doesn’t need to get extra sickness off of me! That was my justification, anyway, so the only physical contact between us was a light hug when I left.
Mind you, I like giving hugs. Ask people who know me, “Does Shawn like giving hugs?” “You don’t know? … Run. Fast. Before he gets his arms around you.” You’ll hear that from my family, my friends, random strangers on the bus… trust me, I like giving hugs. Consequently, thinking about my departure last night wasn’t sitting all that well with me today. (It also occurred to me that if I was gonna make someone sick, wouldn’t the best place to do that be in a hospital?)
I finally decided at the end of the work day that I was gonna fix that. I was going to make up for my crappy hug by going back to visit him tonight and give him a much bigger one. It was going to show a lot more love and affection and that’s what I really wanted to convey, so that’s what I was gonna do. As I got into my car, I started thinking about my schedule: “If I watch the tape from Beauty and the Geek—it was two hours, so that’ll take maybe an hour and forty minutes if I skip through the commercials—I should have some time to check my e-mail, then get there in time to watch the soccer game.”
As I was pulling onto the interstate to head home, I reaffirmed that, yes, I would be going back to the hospital tonight. Then I looked at the sky just to my right and there was a giant rainbow. Huge. It had been a gorgeous day and I spent some time basking in the sun at the end of my lunch break, but there it was: a gigantic rainbow. That seemed like a pretty good sign that I was making the right decision, don’t you think?
It turned out that it was. The game was replaying the US Women’s National Team getting spanked 4-0 by Brazil this morning, but at least I showed up, chatted for a while, watched some TV, then gave out a huuuuuge hug when I left. It felt much better than last time, but if I see another rainbow when I leave work tomorrow… right back to the hospital to give an even better hug when I leave. But maybe not give it to the nurse this time.
Awww…. what a good guy you are š
