“Not everyone’s a winner!”

Okay, I was having some trouble sleeping last night because I wanted to make sure to get to the post office before it closed up at 5:00. (I think I’m joking when I write that…) It never crossed my mind that today—technically, yesterday—was Veterans’ Day and the post office was closed. I just wanted to make sure I got my home tape in the mail to meet any imaginary deadlines the WB may have placed on me.

I guess I got out of bed at a good time because I was up and moving around when my cell phone rang. The number started with 310, so it was someone from California, but I didn’t recognize the number. When I answered the phone, it was Megan. She had one simple message to pass along:

“You’re in the finals.”

Aside from explaining that there would be a lot more paperwork coming in the mail, she wanted to emphasize a couple things:

  • First off, not many people make it to the finals. That’s a comforting thought—they didn’t weed out three or four of us and place the rest in the finals.
  • She also said there would be a lot more “finals” in the future. Riiiight… (Makes sense, given that they’re probably looking for a few contestants outside of Minnesota, but calling this the “finals” is like a restaurant calling a small drink “medium.”)
  • Best of all, Megan assured me that because I was in the finals, I could be sure that people would watch my home tape instead of just tucking it away into some drawer and letting it rot until the end of time.

I asked at that point whether I still needed to send them my home tape and she said yes, they wanted the additional footage. Damn…

Still, it’s nice to know that I’ve made it this far. I’m not expecting much more after I ship out the tape and questionnaire—Lord knows what they’ll think of me after seeing a 4 ½ minute head shot that includes some serious facial contortions. If nothing happens, at least I won’t have to worry about anyone calling to tell me I’ll have to fill out a lot more paperwork and sign away my first-born son because I’ve moved on to the finals. Again.
